Studies on the Early Detection of Gastric malignancy

Abstract
Applying the chymotrypsin lavage method, cytological examination of exfoliative cells from the stomach was performed in one hundred patients with malignant disease(44 cancer patients) and benign lesions(22 gastric and duodenal ulcer patients and 34 gastritis patients).
The cytological examination enabled to confirm the diagnosis in 66% of cancer and 91% of benign cases.
Cytological test was particularly helpful in detecting polypoid cancer of pylorus and fundus early cancer generalized in superficial layer of the mucosa or early cancer developed in the superficial layer of polyps.
Cytological findings offered some information tion of the histopathological background in the malignant changes. Moreover, findings from exfoliative cytology could be used as a better diagnostic tools when it was closely correlated to those findings from X-ray study, endoscopic examination and biopsy of stomach.
It is necessary to have well trained cytotechnician and skillful pathologist to obtain better results in early detection of gastric malignancy.
Since the cytological examination is one of the most accurate safe method of diagnosis for gastric malignancy, the procedure is recommended not only to specialist but also to general practitioner as a-routine screening test.
